Going through a divorce brings emotional, legal, and financial pressures all at once. Amid everything else you are dealing with, making clear-headed financial decisions is genuinely difficult. At Capel Alley, our role is not to add to that pressure. It is to help you feel financially empowered, clear on where you stand today, and confident about the road ahead.
What does a divorce financial settlement actually involve?
A divorce financial settlement determines how assets, income, property, and pensions are divided between both parties. Getting it right matters enormously, not just for today, but for your financial security for years to come.
We work with you to build a complete picture of your current and future financial landscape, so that every decision you make during this process is an informed one. You can take this at your own pace. We will make sure you have the support you need every step of the way.
How we help at every stage
Understanding your financial position
Before any decisions are made, we need to understand exactly where you stand. That means reviewing your assets, liabilities, income, and outgoings in full. Many people going through divorce have never looked at their finances in this level of detail before. That is entirely normal, and it is exactly what we are here for.
Cashflow planning and budgeting
You may be moving from a dual-income household to a single-income one. That shift has real implications for your day-to-day life and your longer-term plans. We help you build a realistic budget and cashflow forecast that reflects your new financial reality, giving you a clear picture of what your future could look like and how sustainable your income and assets will be over time.
Asset division
How assets are divided can have a lasting impact on your financial position. We work closely with you and your legal team to analyse the implications of different settlement scenarios, helping you understand the long-term consequences of each option before any agreement is reached.
Pension sharing and divorce
Pensions are often one of the most significant assets in a divorce settlement and one of the most misunderstood. In cases where there are multiple pensions or the combined value is above a certain threshold, a Pension on Divorce Expert may be instructed to produce a Single Joint Expert report on how pensions can be fairly shared, either through offsetting or pension sharing.
We are experienced at working alongside Pension on Divorce Experts and factoring their analysis into our financial recommendations. Our clients often find it helpful to have us on hand to translate these reports into plain English, so they can make decisions with genuine clarity rather than confusion.
Estate planning after divorce
Divorce will almost certainly require updates to your estate plan, including beneficiary designations, wills, and other legal documents. We work alongside legal professionals to make sure these are updated to properly reflect your new circumstances and wishes.
Working with the right team around you
In most cases, we work alongside our clients’ divorce lawyers and legal teams. If you do not yet have legal representation, we would be happy to introduce you to trusted professionals we work with regularly, including lawyers and tax specialists. Having the right people around you during this process is not a luxury. It can make a real and lasting difference to the outcome.
